RESUMO

Matrix metalloproteinase-12 (MMP12), or macrophage metalloelastase, plays important roles in extracellular matrix (ECM) component degradation. Recent reports show MMP12 has been implicated in the pathogenesis of periodontal diseases. To date, this review represents the latest comprehensive overview of MMP12 in various oral diseases, such as periodontitis, temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMD), orthodontic tooth movement (OTM), and oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Furthermore, the current knowledge regarding the distribution of MMP12 in different tissues is also illustrated in this review. Studies have implicated the association of MMP12 expression with the pathogenesis of several representative oral diseases, including periodontitis, TMD, OSCC, OTM, and bone remodelling. Although there may be a potential role of MMP12 in oral diseases, the exact pathophysiological role of MMP12 remains to be elucidated. Understanding the cellular and molecular biology of MMP12 is essential, as MMP12 could be a potential target for developing therapeutic strategies targeting inflammatory and immunologically related oral diseases.

The oncogene Ras and the tumor suppressor gene p53 are frequently co-mutated in human cancer and mutations in Ras and p53 can cooperate to generate a more malignant cell state. To discover novel druggable targets for cancers carrying co-mutations in Ras and p53, we performed arrayed, kinome focused siRNA and oncology drug phenotypic screening utilizing a set of syngeneic Ras mutant squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) cell lines that also carried co-mutations in selected p53 pathway genes. These cell lines were derived from SCCs from carcinogen-treated inbred mice which harbored germline deletions or mutations in Trp53, p19Arf, Atm, or Prkdc. Both siRNA and drug phenotypic screening converge to implicate the phosphoinositol kinases, receptor tyrosine kinases, MAP kinases, as well as cell cycle and DNA damage response genes as targetable dependencies in SCC. Differences in functional kinome profiles between Ras mutant cell lines reflect incomplete penetrance of Ras synthetic lethal kinases and indicate that co-mutations cause a rewiring of survival pathways in Ras mutant tumors. This study describes the functional kinomic landscape of Ras/p53 mutant chemically-induced squamous cell carcinoma in both the baseline unperturbed state and following DNA damage and nominates candidate therapeutic targets, including the Nek4 kinase, for further development.

Dysregulated expression of ubiquitin-specific protease 43 (USP43) has been recently discovered in malignancies. This study aimed to investigate the expression pattern of USP43 protein in lung squamous cell carcinoma (LUSC) and to explore its correlation with patients' clinicopathological characteristics as well as clinical outcomes. Expression of USP43 protein was determined by immunohistochemistry staining in a retrospective cohort containing 157 LUSC cases who underwent curative surgery in our hospital. Accordingly, USP43 protein was positively correlated with tumor size, depth of invasion, and lymph node metastasis. Patients with increased USP43 expression or positive lymph nodes exhibited a poorer overall survival. In addition, cellular assays elucidated that USP43 can promote LUSC growth and invasion. Taken together, our study demonstrated that USP43 may act as a proto-oncogene, which could be a promising biomarker and therapeutic target in the survival prediction and treatment of LUSC.

The aim of this study is to explore the role of mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) in cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (CSCC), Bowen's disease (BD), and actinic keratosis (AK) with squamous cell differentiation abnormality and its relationship with the degree of tumor proliferation. Thirty cases of clinical paraffin specimens of CSCC, BD, and AK were each collected from Jinhua Fifth Hospital, while 30 cases of normal skin specimens surgically resected in Department of Plastic Surgery were selected as controls. The expressions of mTOR and Ki-67 in tissues were detected by immunohistochemical staining. The positive expression rate of mTOR in the CSCC group was higher than those in the BD group and AK group (P < 0.05), while it was higher in the BD group and AK group than in the normal skin group (P < 0.05). The CSCC group had a higher positive expression rate of Ki-67 than the AK group (P < 0.01). The results of logistic regression analysis showed that the pathogenic site [odds ratio (OR) = 1.189, 95% confidence interval (95%CI): 1.028-1.381, P = 0.021], course of disease (OR = 2.059, 95%CI: 1.036-4.087, P = 0.043), and differentiation degree (OR = 1.325, 95%CI: 1.169-1.512, P = 0.001) were independent factors for the positive expression of mTOR. OR>1, indicating that the factor is a risk factor. The expression levels of mTOR in CSCC, BD, and AK were positively correlated with the expression level of Ki-67 (r = 0.827, P < 0.01, r = 0.608, P < 0.01, r = 0.368, P = 0.045). These results suggest that mTOR may be involved in the pathogenesis of CSCC, and related to the proliferation degree of CSCC, as an index reflecting the proliferation status of CSCC.

Lung squamous cell carcinoma (LUSC) is a subtype of non-small cell lung cancer with poor prognosis. This study aimed to explore the role of KDM2B in the development of LUSC. The results of this study demonstrated that KDM2B was upregulated in LUSC tissues and cell lines. Knockdown of KDM2B reduced cell viability and colony forming ability in SK-MES-1 and NCI-H520 cells. KDM2B inhibition reduced glucose consumption, lactate production, ATP level, and also downregulated the expression of LDHA and GLUT1. KDM2B knockdown decreased the protein expression of LC3-I and p62, and increased LC3-II and Beclin-1. Furthermore, KDM2B silencing inhibited the phosphorylation of AKT, mTOR and P70S6K. KDM2B knockdown led to reduced tumor size in mouse model. In conclusion, KDM2B is upregulated in LUSC tissues and cell lines. KDM2B silencing inhibits glycolysis and promotes autophagy through inactivation of the PI3K/Akt/mTOR signaling pathway.

Cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas (cSCC) are among the most commonly diagnosed malignancies, causing significant morbidity and mortality. Tumor-associated macrophage (TAM) expression of arginase is implicated in tumor progression, and therapeutic use of arginase inhibitors has been studied in various cancers. However, investigating potential cSCC immunotherapies including arginase inhibition in pre-clinical models is hampered by the lack of appropriate tumor models in immunocompetent mice. PDV is a cSCC cell line derived from chemical carcinogenesis of mouse keratinocytes. PDVC57 cells were derived from a PDV tumor in C57BL/6 (B6) mice. Unlike PDV, PDVC57 tumors grow consistently in B6 mice, and have increased TAMs, decreased dendritic and T cell intra-tumor infiltration. Arginase inhibition in cSCC tumors using Nω-hydroxy-nor-arginine (nor-NOHA) reduced tumor growth in B6 mice but not immunodeficient Rag1-deficient mice. nor-NOHA administration increased dendritic and T cell tumor-infiltration and PD-1 expression. The combination of nor-NOHA and anti-PD-1 therapy with nivolumab enhanced anti-PD-1 therapeutic efficacy. This study demonstrates the therapeutic potential of transcutaneous arginase inhibition in cSCC. A competent immune microenvironment is required for tumor growth inhibition using this arginase inhibitor. Synergistic co-inhibition of tumor growth in these results, supports further examination of transcutaneous arginase inhibition as a therapeutic modality for cSCC.

In the last two decades, various therapies have been introduced for lung carcinoma patients, including tyrosine-kinase inhibitors for different mutations. While some of them are specific to specific tumor types, others, like NTRK1-3 fusions, are found in various solid tumors. The occurrence of an NTRK1,2 or 3 fusion acts as a biomarker for efficient treatment with NTRK inhibitors, irrespectively of the tumor type. However, the occurrence of the NTRK1-3 fusions in lung carcinomas is extremely rare. We performed a retrospective analysis to evaluate the applicability of immunohistochemistry with the pan-TRK antibody in the detection of NTRK fusions in lung carcinomas. The study cohort included 176 adenocarcinomas (AC), 161 squamous cell carcinomas (SCC), 31 large-cell neuroendocrine carcinomas (LCNEC), and 19 small cell lung carcinomas (SCLC). Immunohistochemistry (IHC) was performed using the pan-TRK antibody (clone EPR17341, Ventana) on tissue microarrays, while confirmation for all positive cases was done using RNA-based Archer FusionPlex MUG Lung Panel. On IHC staining, 12/387 samples (3.1%) demonstrated a positive reaction. Ten SCC cases (10/161, 6.2%), and two LCNEC cases (2/31, 6.5%) were positive. Positive cases demonstrated heterogeneous staining of tumor cells, mostly membranous with some cytoplasmic and in one case nuclear pattern. RNA-based sequencing did not demonstrate any NTRK1-3 fusion in our patients' collective. Our study demonstrates that pan-TRK expression in lung carcinoma is very low across different histologic types. NTRK1-3 fusions using an RNA-based sequencing approached could not be detected. This stresses the importance of confirmation of immunohistochemistry results by molecular methods.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Phosphodiesterase 5 (PDE5) holds clinical relevance in several pathological states, including lung, breast, and prostate cancer. In this study, we examined PDE5 expression in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC)-derived cell lines and tissues, and the anti-tumour effect of PDE5 inhibitor, sildenafil citrate (SC). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Cell proliferation, cell invasion, and gap closure assays were performed in six OSCC-derived cell lines upon treatment with varying concentrations of SC. PDE5 expression was determined in primary OSCC tissues by western blotting and immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: Elevated PDE5 expression was observed in all cell lines. A concentration-dependent decrease in cell viability, invasion rate, and migration was observed after SC treatment. A significant correlation (p=0.05) was observed between elevated PDE5 expression and lymphatic infiltration in OSCC tissues. CONCLUSION: PDE5 plays an important role in carcinogenesis of OSCC, and the specific inhibition of PDE5 may be an effective chemotherapeutic strategy.

Squamous cell carcinomas of the lung, head and neck, esophagus, and cervix account for more than two million cases of cancer per year worldwide with very few targetable therapies available and minimal clinical improvement in the past three decades. Although these carcinomas are differentiated anatomically, their genetic landscape shares numerous common genetic alterations. Amplification of the third chromosome's distal portion (3q) is a distinguishing genetic alteration in most of these carcinomas and leads to copy-number gain and amplification of numerous oncogenic proteins. This area of the chromosome harbors known oncogenes involved in squamous cell fate decisions and differentiation, including TP63, SOX2, ECT2, and PIK3CA. Furthermore, novel targetable oncogenic kinases within this amplicon include PRKCI, PAK2, MAP3K13, and TNIK. TCGA analysis of these genes identified amplification in more than 20% of clinical squamous cell carcinoma samples, correlating with a significant decrease in overall patient survival. Alteration of these genes frequently co-occurs and is dependent on 3q-chromosome amplification. The dependency of cancer cells on these amplified kinases provides a route toward personalized medicine in squamous cell carcinoma patients through development of small-molecules targeting these kinases.

Cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas (cSCCs) account for about 20% of keratinocyte carcinomas, the most common cancer in the UK. Therapeutic options for cSCC patients who develop metastasis are limited and a better understanding of the biochemical pathways involved in cSCC development/progression is crucial to identify novel therapeutic targets. Evidence indicates that the phosphoinositide 3-kinases (PI3Ks)/Akt pathway plays an important role, in particular in advanced cSCC. Questions remain of whether all four PI3K isoforms able to activate Akt are involved and whether selective inhibition of specific isoform(s) might represent a more targeted strategy. Here we determined the sensitivity of four patient-derived cSCC cell lines to isoform-specific PI3K inhibitors to start investigating their potential therapeutic value in cSCC. Parallel experiments were performed in immortalized keratinocyte cell lines. We observed that pan PI3Ks inhibition reduced the growth/viability of all tested cell lines, confirming the crucial role of this pathway. Selective inhibition of the PI3K isoform p110α reduced growth/viability of keratinocytes and of two cSCC cell lines while affecting the other two only slightly. Importantly, p110α inhibition reduced Akt phosphorylation in all cSCC cell lines. These data indicate that growth and viability of the investigated cSCC cells display differential sensitivity to isoform-specific PI3K inhibitors.

Most patients with oral squamous cell cancer (OSCC) have a locally advanced stage at diagnosis. The treatment strategies are diverse, including surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Despite multimodality treatment, the response rate is unsatisfactory. DNA repair and genetic instability are highly associated with carcinogenesis and treatment outcomes in oral squamous cell cancer, affecting cell growth and proliferation. Therefore, focusing on DNA repair and genetic instability interactions could be a potential target for improving the outcomes of OSCC patients. DNA polymerase-ß (POLB) is an important enzyme in base excision repair and contributes to gene instability, leading to tumorigenesis and cancer metastasis. The aim of our study was to confirm POLB regulates the growth of OSCC cells through modulation of cell cycle and chromosomal instability. We analyzed a tissue array from 133 OSCC patients and discovered that low POLB expression was associated with advanced tumor stage and poor overall survival. In multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression analysis, low POLB expression and advanced lymph node status were significantly associated with poor survival. By performing in vitro studies on model cell lines, we demonstrated that POLB silencing regulated cell cycles, exacerbated mitotic abnormalities and enhanced cell proliferation. After POLB depletion, OSCC cells showed chromosomal instability and aneuploidy. Thus, POLB is an important maintainer of karyotypic stability in OSCC cells.

The aim of our study was to assess the quality of Tanzanian cervical cancer specimens, evaluating telomerase alterations and human papilloma virus (HPV) infection in relation to histopathological characteristics since these biomarkers are not routinely analyzed. Thirty-two Tanzanian women with invasive cervical cancer were included in the study. Histopathological classification and all the analyses on tissue, including TERT immunohistochemistry, were performed at IRST IRCCS (Meldola, Italy). HPV typization was performed by pyrosequencing. FHACT™ was used to identify chromosomal aberrations. Nonparametric ranking statistics were used. The majority (75 %) of the cases analyzed were squamous carcinoma, while 12.5 % were adenocarcinoma. The presence of HPV infection was confirmed in 26/27 (96.3 %) cases. A high percentage of patients (88 %) were infected with HPV16 of whom 12 (44.4 %) with African type 1, and 4 (14.8 %) with African type 2. TERT expression evaluated in the entire case series showed a median H-score of 130 (range 3-270), with only one negative case. 88 % of the FISH-evaluable samples showed an amplification of the chromosomal region 3q26 (TERC) and/or 5p15, and 20q13, associated with a higher median expression of TERT (P = 0.0226). Despite pre-analytical problems in terms of sample fixation, we showed that the search for biomarkers such as HPV and telomerase is feasible in Tanzanian tissue. These markers could be important risk-stratification tools in this population.

Esophageal cancer is a prominent worldwide illness that is divided into two main subtypes: esophageal squamous cell carcinoma and esophageal adenocarcinoma. Mortality rates are alarming, and the understanding of the mechanisms involved in esophageal cancer development, becomes essential. Purinergic signaling is related to many diseases and among these various types of tumors. Here we studied the effects of the P2Y2 receptor activation in different types of esophageal cancer. Esophageal tissue samples of healthy controls were used for P2Y2R expression quantification. Two human esophageal cancer cell lines Kyse-450 (squamous cell carcinoma) and OE-33 (adenocarcinoma) were used to perform in vitro analysis of cell proliferation, migration, adhesion, and the signaling pathways involved in P2Y2R activation. Data showed that P2Y2R was expressed in biopsies of patients with ESCC and adenocarcinoma, as well as in the two human esophageal cancer cell lines studied. The RT-qPCR analysis demonstrated that OE-33 cells have higher P2RY2 expression than Kyse-450 squamous cell line. Results showed that P2Y2R activation, induced by ATP or UTP, promoted esophageal cancer cells proliferation and colony formation. P2Y2R blockage with the selective antagonist, AR-C 118925XX, led to decreased proliferation, colony formation and adhesion. Treatments with ATP or UTP activated ERK 1/2 pathway in ESCC and ECA cells. The P2Y2R antagonism did not alter the migration of esophageal cancer cells. Interestingly, the esophageal cancer cell lines presented a distinct profile of nucleotide hydrolysis activity. The modulation of P2Y2 receptors may be a promising target for esophageal cancer treatment.

The incidence of cutaneous keratinocyte-derived cancers is increasing globally. Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common malignancy worldwide, and cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) is the most common metastatic skin cancer. BCC can be classified into subtypes based on the histology, and these subtypes are classified further into low- and high-risk tumors. There is an increasing need to identify new therapeutic strategies for the treatment of unresectable and metastatic cSCC, and for aggressive BCC variants such as infiltrating, basosquamous or morpheaform BCCs. The most important risk factor for BCC and cSCC is solar UV radiation, which causes genetic and epigenetic alterations in keratinocytes. Similar gene mutations are noted already in sun-exposed normal skin emphasizing the role of the alterations in the tumor microenvironment in the progression of cSCC. Early events in cSCC progression are alterations in the composition of basement membrane and dermal extracellular matrix induced by influx of microbes, inflammatory cells and activated stromal fibroblasts. Activated fibroblasts promote inflammation and produce growth factors and proteolytic enzymes, including matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). Transforming growth factor-ß produced by tumor cells and fibroblasts induces the expression of MMPs by cSCC cells and promotes their invasion. Fibroblast-derived keratinocyte growth factor suppresses the malignant phenotype of cSCC cells by inhibiting the expression of several MMPs. These findings emphasize the importance of interplay of tumor and stromal cells in the progression of cSCC and BCC and suggest tumor microenvironment as a therapeutic target in cSCC and aggressive subtypes of BCC.

Peroxiredoxin 2 (PRDX2) is upregulated in various cancers including oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). It is a known tumor promoter in some cancers, but its role in OSCC is unclear. This study aimed to investigate the effect of arecoline, an alkaloid of the betel nut, and human papillomavirus type 16 (HPV16) E6/E7 oncoproteins on induction of PRDX2 expression, and also the effects of PRDX2 overexpression in oral cell lines. Levels of PRDX2 protein were determined using western blot analysis of samples of exfoliated normal oral cells (n = 75) and oral lesion cells from OSCC cases (n = 75). Some OSCC cases were positive for HPV infection and some patients had a history of betel quid chewing. To explore the level of PRDX2 by western blot, the proteins were extracted from oral cell lines that were treated with arecoline or retroviruses containing HPV16 E6 gene and HPV16 E6/E7 expressing vector. For analysis of PRDX2 functions, cell proliferation, cell-cycle progression, apoptosis and migration was compared between oral cells overexpressing PRDX2 and cells with PRDX2-knockdown. PRDX2 expression levels tended to be higher in OSCC samples that were positive for HPV infection and had history of betel quid chewing. Arecoline treatment in vitro at low concentrations and overexpression of HPV16 E6 or E6/E7 in oral cells induced PRDX2 overexpression. Interestingly, in oral cells, PRDX2 promoted cell proliferation, cell-cycle progression (G2/M phase), cell migration and inhibited apoptosis. Upregulation of PRDX2 in oral cells was induced by arecoline and HPV16 oncoproteins and promoted growth of OSCC cells.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), which causes COVID-19, utilizes angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) for entry into target cells. ACE2 has been proposed as an interferon-stimulated gene (ISG). Thus, interferon-induced variability in ACE2 expression levels could be important for susceptibility to COVID-19 or its outcomes. Here, we report the discovery of a novel, transcriptionally independent truncated isoform of ACE2, which we designate as deltaACE2 (dACE2). We demonstrate that dACE2, but not ACE2, is an ISG. In The Cancer Genome Atlas, the expression of dACE2 was enriched in squamous tumors of the respiratory, gastrointestinal and urogenital tracts. In vitro, dACE2, which lacks 356 amino-terminal amino acids, was non-functional in binding the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein and as a carboxypeptidase. Our results suggest that the ISG-type induction of dACE2 in IFN-high conditions created by treatments, an inflammatory tumor microenvironment or viral co-infections is unlikely to increase the cellular entry of SARS-CoV-2 and promote infection.

Background: Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) that comprises about 90% of all oral cancer cases is associated with poor prognosis due to its highly metastatic nature. The majority of OSCC treatment options are related detrimental side-effects. Hypothesis/Purpose: The present study aimed at deciphering the effects of a bioactive phytochemical, sodium danshensu, on human oral cancer cell metastasis. Methods and Results: The treatment of FaDu and Ca9-22 cells with different doses of sodium danshensu (25, 50, and 100 µM) caused a significant reduction in cellular motility, migration, and invasion, as compared to the untreated cells. This effect was associated with a reduced expression of MMP-2, vimentin and N-cadherin, together with an enhanced expression of E-cadherin and ZO-1. Further investigation on the molecular mechanism revealed that treatment with sodium danshensu caused significant reduction in p38 phosphorylation; however, phosphorylation of ERK1/2 significantly decreased only in FaDu cells, whereas p-JNK1/2 did not show any alteration. A combination of p38 and JNK1/2 inhibitors with sodium danshensu also reduced the migration in the FaDu and Ca9-22 cell lines. Conclusion: Collectively, the present study findings reveal that sodium danshensu execute anti-metastatic effect by suppressing p38 phosphorylation in human oral cancer. The study identifies sodium danshensu as a potential natural anticancer agent that can be used therapeutically to manage highly metastatic OSCC.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is a common malignancy with poor prognosis. Therefore, novel therapeutic options are needed to improve prognosis of OSCC. Recently, microRNAs (miRs) have received increasing attention as a potential therapeutic tool for carcinomas. However, no definitive miR-based drugs for patients with OSCC have been reported to date. The aim of this study was to identify new miRs potentially involved in cellular processes associated with OSCC malignancy, which could lead to novel therapeutic strategies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We identified miRs that are modulated in OSCC and possibly regulate OSCC malignancy, using miR microarray on OSCC cell lines. RESULTS: miR-935 and miR-509-3p were down-regulated in OSCC cell lines and patient tissues. When miR-935 was overexpressed in HSC-3-M3 cells, proliferation, migration, and invasion of the cell line was suppressed, whereas apoptosis was increased. Moreover, we showed that the gene inositol polyphosphate-4-phosphatase type I A (INPP4A) is a potential target whose expression is positively regulated by miR-935. CONCLUSION: miR-935 may function as a tumor suppressor by inhibiting OSCC malignancy via INPP4A induction. Therefore, miR-935 can be a new therapeutic candidate for OSCC treatment.

BACKGROUND: Uridine diphosphate glucuronosyltransferase 1 family polypeptide A1 (UGT1A1) is a predictive biomarker for the side-effects of irinotecan chemotherapy, which reduces the volume of tumors harboring UGT1A1 polymorphisms. We aimed to determine whether UGT1A1 polymorphisms can predict progression-free survival in patients with local cervical cancer treated with irinotecan chemotherapy. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the data of 51 patients with cervical cancer treated at a single institution between 2010 and 2015. All patients were diagnosed with 2009 International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) stage IB1, IB2, IIA, or IIB squamous cell carcinoma, underwent radical hysterectomy, and received irinotecan chemotherapy as neoadjuvant and/or adjuvant treatment. All patients were examined for irinotecan side effects using UGT1A1 tests. Conditional inference tree and survival analyses were performed considering the FIGO stage, age, the UGT1A1 status, and the number of metastatic lymph nodes to determine primary factors associated with progression-free survival. RESULTS: The tree-structured survival model determined high recurrence-risk factors related to progression-free survival. The most relevant factor was ≥2 metastatic lymph nodes (p = 0.004). The second most relevant factor was UGT1A1 genotype (p = 0.024). Among patients with ≤1 metastatic lymph node, those with UGT1A1 polymorphisms benefited from irinotecan chemotherapy and demonstrated significantly longer progression-free survival (p = 0.020) than those with wild-type UGT1A1. CONCLUSIONS: Irinotecan chemotherapy might be beneficial in patients with cervical cancer, UGT1A1 polymorphisms, and ≤ 1 metastatic lymph nodes.

PURPOSE: Demethylation of DNA through enzymes like LSD1 showed a crucial impact on different kind of cancers. Epigenetic modifications in cervical cancer are still not fully investigated nevertheless of high interest for a therapeutic use. METHODS: Tumor samples of 250 cervical cancer patients were immunochemically stained and evaluated based on Immunoreactive Score. Results were statistically analyzed for clinical and pathological parameters. RESULTS: Our patient collective showed a disadvantage for 10-year survival for patients with a strong expression of LSD1 in the cytoplasm of cervical cancer cells. The results of the correlational analysis further revealed a negative correlation of LSD1 to G-protein coupled estrogen receptor (GPER). CONCLUSIONS: Epigenetic changes through enzymes like LSD1 may also be of interest for patients with cervical cancer. A combined therapy with other proteins relayed to cervical cancer like GPER might be of interest for future investigations.
